The Dutch Royal Family perform several ceremonial functions, the King still has limited political influence.<\/span><\/p>\n Dating back to 1896, the Dutch monarchy began when Napoleon Bonaparte appointed Louie Napoleon the King of Holland. Prior to that, the Netherlands was a republic and then became a vassal state of the First French Empire.<\/p>\n During the middle ages, the Netherlands was a collection of divided monarchies with many dukedoms and counties.<\/p>\n In 1813, Prins Willem Frederik of the House of Orange-Nassau became the sovereign ruler of the United Netherlands. The British were instrumental in this to help the Netherlands gain independence from France. The southern regions of the Netherlands were included in the nation.<\/p>\n The Kingdom of the Netherlands currently also includes Saint Martin, Curacao and Aruba.<\/p>\n Since King William I,\u00a0 II and III, the people of Netherlands were introduced to its first queen, Queen Wilhelmina. She was followed by Queen Juliana and\u00a0then\u00a0<\/span>Queen Beatrix, and in 2013 the current\u00a0<\/span>King Willem-Alexander was bought to the throne.<\/p>\n King Willem Alexander\u2019s
